As the world's population grows, environmental concerns mount and the technological revolution expands, there will be an unprecedented demand for civil and coastal engineers. Civil Engineers face difficult challenges to renew, secure, and broaden the capabilities of our nation’s infrastructure and the environment. These challenges are perhaps greater and certainly more complex than the awe-inspiring engineering achievements of the past century, requiring new approaches that draw on the strengths of multiple disciplines in Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering prepares Civil and Coastal engineers for successful careers in an increasingly global and interdisciplinary world, and performs research that results in leading scientific contributions that have a direct impact on our ability to renew, secure, and broaden the capabilities of our nation's infrastructure, environment and homeland security.
They design and supervise the construction of everything from roads and buildings to dams and sewage systems. They consider many factors in the design process, from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and potential environmental hazards such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
