Assistantships & Fellowships

There are many opportunities for financial aid at the University of Florida. Graduate students often teach sections of undergraduate classes, others work in labs. We're also able to award quite a bit of fellowship money through the generosity of our alumni and industry donors. You can begin applying for assistantships and fellowships as soon as you apply for admission. Many students even include an application with the rest of their admissions materials.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships are given to graduate students who work within the university in an academic environment. For example, several undergraduate courses utilize graduate assistants to lead discussion sections, or even lecture. The assistantships are awarded by the college. Students are given a stipend in exchange for their efforts. Department chairs recommend students for assistantships, and the dean of the Graduate School makes all final appointments. Students are expected to maintain good scholarship. Be sure to apply as early as you can—these positions are often quite popular.

Fellowships

Fellowships are funded by gifts to the university and the college. There are several different kinds of fellowships, some are awarded by merit, others by demographic criteria. Ask your department for more information on available fellowships, or visit the UF Office of Admissions Web site.
